Intersections' "Conversations as Melodies" series presented jazz,
opera, hip-hop, and cabaret artists at its third concert May 30.
Artists included jazz and blues vocalist Gregory Porter; vocalist Susan
Gaylord, performing music by Mozart and from "The Great American Song
Book"; hip-hop artist Edgardo Acevedo, who sang an original composition
from his faith-based music ministry; and Flutist Zoi Florosz, who
performed a musical tribute to the legendary Josephine Baker.

The music, created from words given by the audience, fused each of
theses musical traditions together: hip-hop lyric over operatic
tonality; jazz scat lick over cabaret intonations. All were merged with
the improvisational talent of piano accompanist Daniel Kelly.

"Risk" and "courage" were two of the words used in the impromptu
conversation between the audience and the musicians. This inspired a
woman in the audience "to get up and sing, for the very first time, a
song of peace," said Fred Johnson, artistic director at Intersections.
"She had been moved to write this song after she returned from a trip
in the Middle East, where she assisted with aid efforts after the last
Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

The "Conversations as Melodies" series has one final performance
this September. We invite you to join us for another creative and
inspirational evening.
