"The teachers really appreciated the tools on the Change the World section of the website, such as the Letter to the Editor tool, which is such a great way to allow students to become activists in the classroom."
This summer, Intersections staff traveled around the country to
“equip religious leaders, academic educators and the general public
with resources to help ‘change the story’ by changing the stereotypes
we carry of each other, Muslim and non-Muslim alike,” said Sara Reef,
Intersections’ project manager.
In June, Intersections exhibited at the General Synod of the United
Church of Christ (UCC) in Grand Rapids, Mich. More than 3,000 clergy,
lay leaders and youth participants gathered at the biennial event of
the denomination. The UCC and Intersections found much common ground in
their ongoing social justice work, particularly around promoting
positive inter-faith relations.
“The new ChangeTheStory Timeline of Muslim events in America made
its debut and was very well received,” said Sung Park, Intersections’
project manager, of the new educational resource from
ChangeTheStory.net. Park and Megan Hoelle ran a workshop at the General
Synod, where they discussed how clergy can lead their congregations to
action to end discrimination against Muslims.
Over the July 4 weekend, Intersections also exhibited at the 46th
annual Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Convention in
Washington, D.C. The theme, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of
Happiness,” stressed a call for bridge building with non-Muslim
communities. Evangelical Pastor Rick Warren gave the keynote address,
calling for the “two largest faiths on the planet” to work together to
end war, poverty, corruption, disease and illiteracy.
Among other locations, Intersections also presented as part of
Yale’s Summer Institute on Health and Conflict in the Middle East,
which was attended by high school through community college educators.
"The presentation on ChangeTheStory.net was fantastic," said Molly
Moran, outreach director for Council on Middle East Studies. "The
teachers really appreciated the tools on the Change the World section
of the website, such as the Letter to the Editor tool, which is such a
great way to allow students to become activists in the classroom." Sara
Reef and Megan Hoelle also presented at Princeton’s Islam and Civil
Society Seminar.
