“Just as Jews, Christians and Muslims lay claim to a common religious narrative, Muslim children in the United States are staking their claim, indeed shouting out their right, to the American Dream,”
A film screening about Muslim American children in the New York Tri-State area will be hosted by Intersections International (www.intersectionsinternational.org) (II) and Clock Wise Productions (www.abrahamschildrendoc.com) at 6:30PM on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at II’s office located at 274 5th Avenue (between 29th and 30th).
“Just as Jews, Christians and Muslims lay claim to a common religious narrative, Muslim children in the United States are staking their claim, indeed shouting out their right, to the American Dream,” said Dr. Louis Cristillo professor of international and trans-cultural studies at Columbia University who will sit on a panel following the screening. “Whether on the ice rink or in the classroom, in the grassy suburbs or the concrete inner city, in a martial arts dojo class or a mosque, the boys and girls in Abraham’s Children live and dream the American experience. They are America’s children.”
Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States and the world. Every 10th child in the New York School system is Muslim. Abraham’s Children tells the stories of some of these children through their own voices, and gives viewers a sense of the Muslim American experience. Scenes in this feature film— warm and humorous, engaging and uplifting — lie in stark contrast to the constant and inaccurate drumbeat of angry and threatening Muslims as portrayed in the mainstream media.
Abraham’s Children is a film about Islam’s positive influence on shaping the character of young Muslim Americans. The screening will be followed by a short panel conversation featuring Dr. Louis Cristillo, Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University and lecturer on international and trans-cultural studies; Nina Froriep, Director and Producer of Abraham’s Children; and Susan Smith, Public Affairs and Media Relations Rep. for Islamic Relief USA’s Northeast Office. The panel will be moderated by II’s Sara Reef, project manager of intercultural relations.
The public and press are invited to attend this free event in person. RSVP to info@intersectionsinternational.org
