TE’A at Intersections International: Theatre Engagement & Action
TE’A (Theatre, Engagement & Action) gathers Companies of talented theatre artists for the express purpose of creating original, experimental works of Insight theatre. These are multi-genre theatrical performance pieces that integrate the dramatic power of live theatre with the explanatory power of the Insight approach to conflict transformation. The aim of Insight theatre is to create theatrical experiences that transform the perspectives of audience members on the conflicts that divide them.
Under the leadership of Artistic DirectorVieve Radha Price, TE’A has pioneered the development of Insight theatre by creating and producing three acclaimed, original, full-length works in its first five years. These include Under the Veil (2009), designed to foster the intersections of Muslims and non-Muslims in post-9/11 New York; Cadence: Home (2012), designed to foster the intersections of non-military civilians and American veterans facing the complex challenges of returning home from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan; and Uniform Justice (2014), designed to foster the intersections of community members and police officers in communities torn by retaliatory violence and crisis in the rule of law.
Presently, TE’A is engaged in its most ambitious and pioneering Insight theatre project yet. Working with a larger and more artistically diverse Company of artists than ever before, TE’A is in the process of creating There’s Something About America – a multi-genre performance piece that will transform the perspectives of audience members on the problem of polarization in America and foster the intersections of Americans polarized over contemporary issues of great political, social, and cultural concern.
The Insight approach to conflict transformation is a practical application of Bernard Lonergan’s Insight theory. It is based on the following simple yet subtle insight. Since we use our minds when we are making our decisions to engage in conflict with others, if we can pay attention to the way we are using our minds when we do so, we can open up the possibility of changing our minds and of transforming our conflicts. Insight theatre is based on the insight that live theatrical performance is the most effective, accessible, and entertaining way to pay attention to the way we use our minds whenwe lock ourselves into conflict with others, and to foster the possibility of its transformation.
Working with a larger and more artistically diverse company than ever before, TE’A is currently developing There’s Something About America – a multi-genre performance piece focused on the polarization in America over contemporary issues of great political, social, and cultural concern.
